We believe God calls everyone, not just into church leadership, but into lives full of purpose, love, and service. For some, that calling might lead to ordained ministry. For others, it’s lived out through everyday discipleship, through volunteering, or in the work they do beyond church walls. We call the different routes vocations in church.

Whatever your vocation, your calling matters. Every role, whether on the streets, behind the scenes, or at the front of a service, plays a part in God’s story. And if you’re here, maybe you’re wondering if your next step might be into a deeper kind of service.

Exploring the Call

Ever had that sense, nudge, that maybe you’re meant to do more? To lead, to pastor, to serve? That might just be a calling. Vocations in church can be hugely fulfilling, exciting opportunities.

At Stour Church, we’d love to explore that with you. The journey from feeling called to stepping into church leadership looks different for everyone. But it all starts the same way: with a conversation.

We’ve got a range of roles here, from ordained ministry to vital lay and leadership positions, all bi-vocational (meaning you can serve while still working your regular job). Here’s a snapshot of what that looks like:

  • Minister (Ordained)
  • Deacon (Ordained)
  • Lay Minister (Non-ordained)
  • Treasurer (Non-ordained)
  • Secretary (Non-ordained)
  • Mission Volunteer (Non-ordained)

There’s more info about each below, and if it’s an ordained route you’d like to explore, read through this page. But if you’re already feeling the pull, why not take the first step? Drop us an email at office@stourchurch.co.uk, tell us who you are, what you’re feeling called to, and why you think this might be the right next step for you.

Ordained Roles

Minister: Ministers are spiritual leaders in our church community, leading us in prayer, worship, and teaching, and helping people grow in faith. They’re there for the big moments (like baptisms, weddings, and funerals) and the quiet ones too, offering care, listening ears, and wise guidance along the way.

Deacon: Deacons are bridge-builders, people with a heart for justice, compassion, and community. Their calling often focuses on meeting people where they are, especially those most in need. Deacons help the church stay grounded in the real world and connected to the people we’re here to serve.

If you would like to explore how to get ordained with Stour Church, we have put together an information page to help you. You can also contact us using the email address at the bottom of this web page.

Non-Ordained Roles

Lay Minister: Our Lay Ministers bring their everyday expertise — in things like governance, leadership, or tech — and help shape specific areas of the church’s life. The “minister” title here isn’t theological; it’s more like a team lead or head of department. These roles keep the wheels turning and the mission moving.

Treasurer & Secretary: These behind-the-scenes roles are absolutely essential. The Treasurer keeps our finances clear and ethical. The Secretary helps with records, systems, and making sure the practical stuff gets done. Both are key to the church running smoothly and sustainably.

Just Want to Help?

Not everyone’s called to formal vocations in church, and that’s more than okay. God calls us in all sorts of ways. Maybe you feel led to serve through simple acts of kindness, street missions, hospitality, or prayer. We’re always looking for volunteers to support our mission projects, so if you’ve got time, heart, or hands to offer, let’s talk. Drop us an email at office@stourchurch.co.uk.
